SFUSD continues to monitor the air quality index for the City and County of San Francisco for the week of Oct. 16. Principals are getting regular updates regarding precautions they should take, including bringing activities indoors when the air quality is orange or red and monitoring students with asthma and other health conditions. As the forecast changes during the school day or at any time during this week, an update will be provided to principals right away. Check the current the air quality index at airnow.gov.

El SFUSD continúa monitorizando el índice de calidad del aire para la Ciudad y el Condado de San Francisco durante la semana del 16 de octubre. Los directores reciben actualizaciones periódicas con respecto a las precauciones que deben tomar, incluso realizar las actividades dentro de las instalaciones cuando la calidad del aire es naranja o roja y vigilar los estudiantes con asma y otras condiciones de salud. Conforme el pronóstico cambie durante el día escolar o en cualquier momento durante esta semana, de inmediato se proporcionarán actualizaciones a los directores. San Francisco Unified School District officials are working closely with the Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Public Health to monitor the air quality situation in San Francisco. At this time, we continue to advise schools to conduct indoor activities during the school day. Schools will be open Friday, Oct. 13. If San Francisco's air quality is downgraded further, we will consult with Department of Public Health and provide families and staff with an update.

Los funcionarios del Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Francisco están trabajando estrechamente con el Departamento de Manejo de Emergencias y el Departamento de Salud Pública para vigilar la calidad del aire en San Francisco. En este momento, seguimos recomendando a las escuelas que realicen las actividades dentro del plantel durante el día escolar. Las escuelas estarán abiertas el viernes 13 de octubre. Si la calidad del aire de San Francisco disminuye aún más, consultaremos con el Departamento de Salud Pública, con el fin de proporcionar a las familias y al personal una actualización sobre la situación.

San Francisco has very poor air quality due to the fires in the North Bay. SFUSD has advised all school sites ​to keep students indoors on Oct. 12 during recess​, physical education​ and lunc​h​​. All outdoor sports and learning ​activities should ​also ​​​be ​moved indoors.  

 

These guidelines are to remain in place until the San Francisco Department of Public Health deems the air quality has improved and it is safe for children to do activities outdoors. We will continue to update principals regarding any changes. 

 

由於北灣火災,三藩市空氣質素非常差劣。三藩市聯合校區已吩咐所有學校在小息、體育堂及午餐時安排學生留在室內活動。所有戶外運動和學習活動也應轉到室內進行。

En estos momentos la ciudad de San Francisco tiene muy mala calidad del aire debido a los incendios en el norte de la Bahía de San Francisco. El Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Francisco (SFUSD) ha aconsejado a todas las escuelas que mantengan a los alumnos en el interior de sus inmuebles el 12 de octubre durante el recreo, la clase de educación física y el almuerzo. Todos los deportes y actividades docentes al aire libre deben también realizarse en el interior de las escuelas.

 

Estas directrices deberán respetarse hasta que el Departamento de Salud Pública de San Francisco considere que la calidad del aire ha mejorado y es seguro para los alumnos realizar actividades al aire libre. El SFUSD continuará informando a los directores de las escuelas sobre cualquier cambio de última hora.

Beginning at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 11, the air quality in San Francisco is expected to become "unhealthy for sensitive groups" (known as a code orange). At that time, schools have been advised to minimize outdoor exertion for students and staff with asthma or other health issues. Alternative activities and settings will be made available for all students at all of our schools.

 

各位三藩市聯合校區家長:從今天下午2點開始,預計三藩市的空氣質量會升級為橙色警告,即“對敏感人群有健康危害”。 學校已經收到建議盡量減少哮喘或有其他健康問題的學生和工作人員的戶外運動,並提供其它活動給所有學生。

 

Se espera que hoy alrededor de las 2:00 de la tarde, la calidad del aire en San Francisco no sea saludable “en especial para los grupos de personas más sensibles” (conocido como código naranja). Al llegar ese tiempo, a las escuelas se les ha recomendado que “a estudiantes y personal con padecimientos de asma o de salud” se les limite la salida al exterior. Para todos nuestros estudiantes de las escuelas se tendrán disponibles medidas y actividades alternativas.

To date, nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrant youth have been granted DACA status, which provides work authorization and temporary relief from deportation. The program has enabled our graduates to contribute to their communities by significantly increasing opportunities for higher education and jobs. Unfortunately, on September 5, 2017, President Trump directed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to phase out and eventually end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) over two and half years. USCIS will continue to accept and process RENEWAL applications until Oct. 5, 2017 from applicants whose DACA expires between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018. Below are resources in support of DACA students who are eligible for renewal:

Dear SFUSD Families:

 

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

 

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

 

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

 

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

 

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scal​​e from $50-$500/month based on income.

Estimadas Familias del SFUSD:

 

En el SFUSD, la mayoría de los programas escolares de aprendizaje después de clases y durante el verano son copatrocinados por el SFUSD (el programa ExCEL) y las organizaciones comunitarias. La mayoría se financia a través de subvenciones municipales, estatales y federales. Estas subvenciones a menudo se otorgan con una duración de tres a cinco ciclos largos y su renovación no se puede garantizar una vez que el ciclo de la subvención ha terminado. في مقاطعة مدارس سان فرانسيسكو الموحدة، اغلب برامج بعد المدرسة الواقعة بالمدارس وبرامج التعلم بالصيف تتم برعاية مشتركة بواسطة مقاطعة مدارس سان فرانسيسكو الموحدة (برنامج اكسيل) والمنظمات المجتمعية.  الاغلب يتم تمويلها بواسطة مجلس المدينة، الولاية والمنح الاتحادية.  هذه الهبات تمنح عادة في ثلاث الى خمس دورات طويلة وغير مضمون تجديدها في حال انتهاء دورة المنحة. للأسف، علمت المقاطعة قريبا بأنها خسرت 3.3 $ مليون دولار من المنح الفيدرالية التنافسية لدعم خدمات برامج تعليم بعد المدرسة للأهالي. يرجى ملاحظة ان هذا لايمت بصلة الى الاقتطاعات التمويلية الفيدرالية لبرامج بعد المدرسة لكن عوضا عن ذلك بسبب عدم الحصول على منحة القرن الـ 21 التنافسية.

 

نفهم اهمية برامج تعلم بعد المدرسة والصيف ونحن ملتزمون بالمحافظة على خدمات برامج بعد المدرسة والصيف. ولضمان استمرارية الخدمات، سوف نحرك تمويل اكثر من المقاطعة الى دعم هذه الخدمات وايضا تطبيق هيكلية رسوم دفع مشتركة على مستوى المقاطعة لجميع برامج اكسيل الابتدائية/ الحضانة – 8  والمتوسطة.  لدى بعض البرامج بنية رسوم جاهزة. سوف يبداء تنفيذ الرسوم المشتركة للعام الدراسي 2017 – 2018.  تحسبا للحاجة الى نموذج تكويل افضل، اقر مجلس التعليم تطبيق بنية رسوم دفع مشتركة في 2014 مع قراره بعنوان بعد المدرسة للجميع.

 

كل برنامج اكسل لبعد المدرسة سوف شارك بالمزيد من التفاصيل لكن بالعموم، اليكم المبادئ التوجيهية للرسوم التي ستتبعها جميع البرامج:

 

سوف يتم اعفاء الرسوم المشتركة للطفل الذي: 1) مؤهل للغداء المجاني او المخفض ماعدى تلك الرسوم المطلوبة بواسطة البرامج المحلية، الولاية او مساعدة الفيدرالية للرسوم،  2) المشرد او، 3) لبيوت رعاية الشباب.

 

جميع الاطفال الاخرين سوف يدفعون رسوم مشاركة بمقياس متدرج من 50$ - 500$ / شهريا حسب الدخل

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.


Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

 

Co-sponsors: the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University, TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers), the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and the Square and Circle Club.

This is an update for families who submitted applications by January 13, 2017 for an SFUSD school assignment. We are on track to send assignment letters via first class mail on Monday evening, March 20. Families should receive letters starting on Tuesday, March 21. The registration deadline has been extended by a week to April 21.  

 

Please do not come to the Educational Placement Center for information about your assignment, as staff will not have any information on Monday regarding assignments.  

 

We recognize that you may be deciding next steps regarding independent and private schools. Please note that no information about assignments will be available before March 21. If you need information before your letter arrives, please email EnrollinSchool@sfusd.edu and we will do what we can to help you after March 21.  

 

We are truly sorry for the delay.

This is an update for families who submitted applications by January 13, 2017 for an SFUSD school assignment. As you know SFUSD school assignment letters, which were scheduled to be mailed out by March 17, have been delayed. The delay is due to unforeseen staffing emergencies. SFUSD’s computer system is working as designed and there is a dedicated team working 24-7 to get assignments finalized as quickly as possible given these unforeseen staffing issues. Please be assured we are double checking for accuracy every step of the way and aim to get this information to families as soon as possible.

 

We remain hopeful that letters might be ready by Monday. We are extremely sorry for the delay and will notify you of our progress again tomorrow morning, March 20.

We are excited to share that the district is transitioning from School Loop to Synergy’s Gradebook Family and Student Portals in August 2017. This transition to Synergy will provide SFUSD’s students, families, teachers, and district staff with a unified system for real-time information on classes, grades, assignments, and more. While we know change can be challenging, we firmly believe the transition to Synergy Gradebook will increase efficiency for teachers and improve access for our students and families.

 

What does this mean for students and families?
Starting in August 2017, students and families will log in to Synergy’s Family and Student Portals to access student information related to attendance, assignments and grading. Our transition to Synergy is a response to feedback we have heard from school communities about the need to streamline the number of online systems we use for school-family communications.  Our team will be reaching out to families via parent groups and advisory councils, email, School Messenger, school websites, and School Loop to inform them of the change and provide opportunities to learn more and prepare for the transition in August 2017.  

 

Why are we making this change?

  • One login for attendance and grades for teachers and district staff
  • One login per family, regardless of the number of children and which school they attend
  • Greater clarification and standardization of SFUSD grading practices and policies
  • Increased security and confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Actionable real-time student performance information
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Improved translation options

What will happen with School Loop?
School Loop will continue to be used for school websites next year. However, teachers, students and families will use Synergy instead of School Loop for other communications and  information about grades and assignments.

 

We are confident that Synergy Gradebook is another exciting step to leverage technology to increase engagement in our school communities, enhance data integrity and security, and better position us for 21st century learning, as outlined in Vision 2025 and our Digital District Plan.

Wesley Johnson: The Texas Tornado is the topic as Oxford University Press historian John William Templeton leads a Black History Month service at St. Dominick's Catholic Church, 2390 Bush St. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. 

Prior to the service, Templeton presents a tour of the African-American Freedom Trail at 11 a.m. beginning from the Martin Luther King Waterfall in Yerba Buena Gardens. 

Johnson came to San Francisco at age nine in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and achieved a number of milestones at each stage of his life. Highlights include welcoming the debate team from Wiley College in Texas to San Francisco State Teachers College in 1935 for an interracial debate with S.F. State and U.C-Berkeley. The Wiley debaters were popularized in the Oprah Winfrey-produced film The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington. Johnson also opened the Flamingo Club and Hotel Texas at 1832-6 Fillmore Street in 1943 for a 25 year run as the heart of the Fillmore nightlife scene. 

The African-American Freedom Trail, as featured on NBC Bay Area and KPIX, is part of a statewide trail which documents the role of African-Americans in 500 years of California history.  More than 400 sites are in San Francisco, including three current churches and two Prince Hall lodges founded in 1852.

Come join Oxford University Press historian John William Templeton as he leads the seventh annual Come to the Water: Teaching California Black History seven-week course. The author of Our Roots Run Deep: The Black Experience in California, Vols.1-4, Templeton is the creator of the West's first African American Freedom Trail. 
 

The next session of the course is Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. in the ReUNION: Education-Arts-Heritage offices at 1691 Turk.

The City & County of San Francisco in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, the SF Alliance of Black School Educators, 100% College Prep, Mo Magic and many other community partners proudly presents the Spring Bi-Annual "Black Family Day" on Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 9:30 am - 2:00 pm at Willie L. Brown Middle School (2055 Silver Ave SF).

The day will feature a delicious Southern buffet brunch, a community resource fair for students and families PK-12, student and staff facilitated STEM activities, student performances and a series of workshops focusing on family empowerment and advocacy. There will also be raffles of amazing prizes such as tablets, gift cards and Warrior’s tickets.

On Nov. 8, 2016, San Franciscans will vote on Proposition A, a $744 million general obligation bond that will fund repairs, and maintenance to SFUSD facilities. The bond would allow SFUSD to construct new schools and make seismic upgrades to existing facilities.

Specifically, Proposition A will:

  • Complete seismic safety and modernization projects to make all schools and other district facilities more earthquake safe and energy efficient;
  • Build new schools and classrooms to accommodate a growing student population;
  • Kickstart development of a new SFUSD Arts Center and Ruth Asawa School of the Arts to preserve and promote music and art in curriculum;
  • Invest in technology improvements including installing higher-speed Wi-Fi for all classrooms to enable 21st century learning;
  • Maintain and expand the district’s green schoolyards program to 91 school sites;
  • Explore methods for developing affordable housing for teachers.

SFUSD would create an independent citizens' oversight committee to report to the public about the use of bond funds. The Board of Education would also conduct an annual, independent audit regarding the use of the bond funds.

Dear fifth grade families,


For the 2017-18 school year,the Board of Education has decided to continue with the current practice for middle school enrollment. Due to a statewide teacher shortage and middle school buildings at capacity, students in fifth grade this year will not receive an automatic assignment for 6th grade. They can still apply to their middle school feeder and, as in the prior school year, they will receive priority.


Please submit your enrollment application by January 13, 2017, listing as many school choices as you like, including the middle school feeder if that is your choice. You can submit the pre-printed application at your child’s current school by January 13, 2017.


Please feel free to speak with a placement counselor from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. any weekday at the Educational Placement Center -- located at 655 DeHaro St. from now through December 16 --  or at 555 Franklin Street, starting December 20.  


We will also be holding informational meetings regarding the elementary to middle school assignment process in November and December:

  • 6 p.m. Monday, November 21, at James Lick Middle School, 1220 Noe Street (sessions will be in English and Spanish)
  • 6 p.m. Monday, November 28, at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 350 Girard Street (sessions will be in English, Spanish and Cantonese)
  • 6 p.m. Thursday, December 1, at Roosevelt Middle School, 460 Arguello Blvd. (sessions will be in English and Cantonese)

Dear SFUSD families,

 

Earlier this week gunshots were fired in the school parking lot at dismissal time at June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE), and four students were physically injured. They are recovering. The assailants were not part of the school and appeared to be targeting one student -- there is no ongoing threat to students at JJSE. This isolated event, although awful, should not be viewed as a negative reflection on JJSE, an extremely safe school focused on caring relationships.  

 

This terrible incident has shaken everyone in the community. While students at other schools were not directly impacted, we recognize that an event like this can bring up difficult feelings for you and your child. Please know that school staff is prepared to discuss these feelings with your child and provide additional support as needed.

 

All school staff remain alert to any potential threats to safety in our school district.  The safety and security of the San Francisco Unified School District’s students and staff is of utmost importance. SFUSD has a comprehensive crisis plan, and district administrators coordinate closely with city emergency management officials and law enforcement representatives to monitor and update plans on a regular basis.

 

In addition, schools have security measures to ensure the well-being of students and staff. These include: visitor check-in procedures, locked doors after the start of the school day, surveillance cameras, and school resource officer support.

 

How we notify you if there is a school emergency

If there is an emergency at your child's school or a citywide emergency that impacts your child’s school, SFUSD will notify parents using the contact information in our student information system. Depending on the impact level of the emergency, we will attempt to reach you via a phone call and email using the information in our database, and, if you have opted in to receive text messages, you will receive text notifications as well.

 

If you do not receive a message it is likely because your current contact information has not been entered into the district’s confidential student information system. We encourage you to check with your school site secretary or principal to ensure they have the most up to date contact information for you in SFUSD’s student information system.  This is the how, in the event of a school or citywide emergency, we can reach you immediately.

 

Notifications regarding high-impact emergencies will also be posted on the district’s website sfusd.edu, Twitter account (@SFUnified) and shared with the media.

 

How to sign up for text notifications

If you have a mobile phone entered into our system, you will receive one prompt from SFUSD via SchoolMessenger asking you to opt in to receiving text messages. The message will only be sent one time from the number 67587 and will read: "SFUSD alerts. Reply Y to confirm, HELP for info. Msg&data rates may apply. Msg freq varies. schoolmessenger.com/txt."

 

We encourage you to reply "Y" to receive text messages from SFUSD and your school, as it often makes for faster communication, which is crucial in the event of an emergency. However, if you do not wish to opt in, you can simply ignore the text message.

 

You will only receive this message one time, and if you do not reply "Y" to confirm, the district cannot send you future text notifications. If you already received a text message and didn’t reply but do want to receive urgent messages via text, you may still sign up by texting “YES” to the number 67587 from your mobile phone. Please note, if you text this number and your mobile phone is not entered in the student information system, messages will not be sent to it.

All of us in the San Francisco Unified School District are deeply troubled by the incident that took place yesterday afternoon in the parking lot at June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE). Our understanding at this time is that a small group of outsiders unaffiliated with the school came to campus around the time of school dismissal, targeting a particular JJSE student for reasons that are presently unclear. Sadly, four students were injured during the incident. They have received appropriate medical attention and are recovering from their injuries. 

 

We want to thank the San Francisco Police Department for their support immediately following the incident and for their work in the ongoing investigation. We are also grateful to the paramedics and medical professionals who tended to our students, and we are committed to supporting our students and their families as they overcome their physical and emotional wounds. We also appreciate the offers of support immediately made by Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor John Avalos. Finally, we commend JJSE’s leaders, faculty and students both for their steady, calm and caring actions as the situation evolved and for the dedicated and courageous efforts that they have already begun to heal from yesterday’s events.  

 

I need to state emphatically that this isolated event, although awful, should not be viewed as a negative reflection on JJSE. June Jordan is an intentionally small, extremely safe school focused on deep and caring relationships between all students and adults. All those connected to this school take great pride in, and put special care toward, creating a nurturing community rooted in the shared value of social justice. Through its small class sizes, college-going culture, and focus on rigorous, independent thinking, many JJSE students become the first in their families to attend college.  

 

Though only four students were physically injured, this terrible incident has shaken everyone in the community, particularly the staff and students at June Jordan. Fortunately the school has a strong tradition of coming together daily to discuss challenging topics and to support one another. In addition to coming together as a community, JJSE has trained counselors who will be meeting with students and faculty. We deeply appreciate the educators and students at June Jordan School for Equity and will proudly stand by them through this disturbing, but temporary, challenge.

Greetings African American Parent Advisory Council Members and Supporters,

 

Please join us Thursday, October 20, 2016 for our monthly AAPAmeeting. The theme for this month is "Yes We Can: Advocate In and Outside of the Classroom". We will meet in the Leola Havard Auditorium located at 1520 Oakdale Avenue beginning at 5:30pm.  Dinner and childcare will be provided.  (Flyer Attached)

 

The agenda will include:

  • Networking with fellow African American families in SFUSD
  • Group activities to help unify and empower us to advocate for our students during Parent Teacher Conferences and throughout the school year
  • A panel discussion with 2016 School Board Candidates
  • Movie Ticket Raffles and Give Aways

 

We are asking that every member bring along two friends and every supporter spread the word as well as personally invite at least 5 African American families to attend.
