Changing fee structure to after school programs

Dear SFUSD Families:

In SFUSD, most school-based after school and summer learning programs are co-sponsored by SFUSD (the ExCEL program) and partnering community based organizations. The majority are funded through city, state and federal grants. These grants are often awarded in three to five long cycles and are not guaranteed to be renewed once a grant cycle has ended. Unfortunately, the district has recently learned that it lost $3.3 million in competitive federal grants to support our after school program services to families. Please note, this is not related to federal funding cuts to after school programs but rather due to not being awarded the competitive 21st Century Learning grant.

We understand how important after school and summer learning is and we are committed to preserving after school and summer program services. In order to ensure that services continue, we will be moving more SFUSD funds into subsidizing these services and also implementing a district wide co-payment fee structure for ALL ExCEL elementary/K-8  and middle after school programs. Some programs already have a fee structure in place. The co-payment fee structure will go into effect for school year 2017-2018. In anticipation of the need for a more sustainable funding model, the Board of Education approved the implementation of a co-payment fee structure in 2014 with its resolution titled After School for All.

Each school’s ExCEL after school programs will share more specifics but in general, here are the fee structure guidelines all programs will follow:

The monthly co-payment fee will be waived for a child who is: 1) eligible for free or reduced  lunch except those fees required by a local, state or federal tuition subsidy program; 2) homeless or; 3)  in foster care.

All other children will pay a co-payment fee on a sliding scale from $50-$500/month based on income.

We recognize that there are times when students and their families may choose to participate in activities such as demonstrations or strikes outside of school during the regular school day. While we respect and support our students' rights to express their views, please note that participation in a demonstration, walkout or strike will not be counted as an excused absence.

American? Angel Island Immigrant Stories

So close, yet so far away.  From 1910 to 1940, many Angel Island Immigration Station immigrants experienced these feelings upon reaching America, but were detained from entering San Francisco.  On May 7, 2017 (12:00-3:00), the San Francisco Public Library Main Library will celebrate Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month by spotlighting personal immigrant stories from those who went through Angel Island.

Look forward to educational games and craft activities for all ages, a display of Angel Island family histories, books, news articles, and photos. The first 50 children ages 12 and under will receive a goody bag.

Co-sponsors: the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University, TACT (The Association of Chinese Teachers), the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, and the Square and Circle Club.

This is an update for families who submitted applications by January 13, 2017 for an SFUSD school assignment. As you know SFUSD school assignment letters, which were scheduled to be mailed out by March 17, have been delayed. The delay is due to unforeseen staffing emergencies. Please be assured we are double checking for accuracy every step of the way and aim to get this information to families as soon as possible.

SFUSD's gender-based discrimination policies

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has a policy in place that explicitly prohibits gender-based discrimination, a protection that extends to everyone, including transgender and gender expansive students.

We are proud that we were the first school district in the country to pass a policy extending safeguards to our transgender student body. We will continue to honor those policies and ensure that transgender and gender nonconforming students in the SFUSD will remain protected from discrimination, bullying and harassment.

Students, know that in California public schools, you have the right to be...

  • Free from bullying, harassment and discrimination
  • Respected when you dress and express yourself in ways that do not conform to gender stereotypes, with respect to the student dress codes
  • Affirmed by adults when you declare your pronoun and name that fits your gender identity
  • Involved in school activities, access spaces such as locker rooms and restrooms, that fits your gender identity

Announcing Synergy Gradebook for All

We are excited to share that the district is transitioning from School Loop to Synergy’s Gradebook Family and Student Portals in August 2017. This transition to Synergy will provide SFUSD’s students, families, teachers, and district staff with a unified system for real-time information on classes, grades, assignments, and more. While we know change can be challenging, we firmly believe the transition to Synergy Gradebook will increase efficiency for teachers and improve access for our students and families.

What does this mean for students and families?
Starting in August 2017, students and families will log in to Synergy’s Family and Student Portals to access student information related to attendance, assignments and grading. Our transition to Synergy is a response to feedback we have heard from school communities about the need to streamline the number of online systems we use for school-family communications.  Our team will be reaching out to families via parent groups and advisory councils, email, School Messenger, school websites, and School Loop to inform them of the change and provide opportunities to learn more and prepare for the transition in August 2017.

Why are we making this change?

  • One login for attendance and grades for teachers and district staff
  • One login per family, regardless of the number of children and which school they attend
  • Greater clarification and standardization of SFUSD grading practices and policies
  • Increased security and confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Actionable real-time student performance information
  • Improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Improved translation options

What will happen with School Loop?
School Loop will continue to be used for school websites next year. However, teachers, students and families will use Synergy instead of School Loop for other communications and  information about grades and assignments.

We are confident that Synergy Gradebook is another exciting step to leverage technology to increase engagement in our school communities, enhance data integrity and security, and better position us for 21st century learning, as outlined in Vision 2025 and our Digital District Plan.

To learn more, check out the exciting G4A Launch Video, go to the Gradebook for All website (www.sfusd.edu/gradebook), or download the attached flier.

Black History Month: Wesley Johnson: The Texas Tornado on Saturday, 2/4 @ 2PM

Wesley Johnson: The Texas Tornado is the topic as Oxford University Press historian John William Templeton leads a Black History Month service at St. Dominick's Catholic Church, 2390 Bush St. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.

Prior to the service, Templeton presents a tour of the African-American Freedom Trail at 11 a.m. beginning from the Martin Luther King Waterfall in Yerba Buena Gardens.

Johnson came to San Francisco at age nine in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition and achieved a number of milestones at each stage of his life. Highlights include welcoming the debate team from Wiley College in Texas to San Francisco State Teachers College in 1935 for an interracial debate with S.F. State and U.C-Berkeley. The Wiley debaters were popularized in the Oprah Winfrey-produced film The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington. Johnson also opened the Flamingo Club and Hotel Texas at 1832-6 Fillmore Street in 1943 for a 25 year run as the heart of the Fillmore nightlife scene.

The African-American Freedom Trail, as featured on NBC Bay Area and KPIX, is part of a statewide trail which documents the role of African-Americans in 500 years of California history.  More than 400 sites are in San Francisco, including three current churches and two Prince Hall lodges founded in 1852.

For more details about the tour, contact John William Templeton at 415-240-3537john@zenviba.org or book at californiablackhistory.com

Message from the Superintendent

We are a community that believes -- fundamentally -- that each child and each person is the equal of every other.

This belief cuts across race, nationality, immigration history, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic means, ability status, language, and age. When we are at our best, we celebrate diversity, embrace our differences, and build on each others' strengths.

We believe strongly in social justice, which means we fight against systemic oppression. We stand up for those who are vulnerable and hope others will do so for us when we need them. We put students' needs first, and we will protect them now.

These core values connect us every day. Let's find ways to move forward together, in unity and in strength.

Myong Leigh

Proposition A bond information

On Nov. 8, 2016, San Franciscans will vote on Proposition A, a $744 million general obligation bond that will fund repairs, and maintenance to SFUSD facilities. The bond would allow SFUSD to construct new schools and make seismic upgrades to existing facilities.

Specifically, Proposition A will:

  • Complete seismic safety and modernization projects to make all schools and other district facilities more earthquake safe and energy efficient;
  • Build new schools and classrooms to accommodate a growing student population;
  • Kickstart development of a new SFUSD Arts Center and Ruth Asawa School of the Arts to preserve and promote music and art in curriculum;
  • Invest in technology improvements including installing higher-speed Wi-Fi for all classrooms to enable 21st century learning;
  • Maintain and expand the district’s green schoolyards program to 91 school sites;
  • Explore methods for developing affordable housing for teachers.

SFUSD would create an independent citizens' oversight committee to report to the public about the use of bond funds. The Board of Education would also conduct an annual, independent audit regarding the use of the bond funds.

This posting is meant to be informational rather than persuasive.

Middle school feeder changes

Dear fifth grade families,

For the 2017-18 school year, the Board of Education has decided to continue with the current practice for middle school enrollment. Due to a statewide teacher shortage and middle school buildings at capacity, students in fifth grade this year will not receive an automatic assignment for 6th grade. They can still apply to their middle school feeder and, as in the prior school year, they will receive priority.

Please submit your enrollment application by January 13, 2017, listing as many school choices as you like, including the middle school feeder if that is your choice. You can submit the pre-printed application at your child’s current school by January 13, 2017.

Please feel free to speak with a placement counselor from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. any weekday at the Educational Placement Center -- located at 655 DeHaro St. from now through December 16 --  or at 555 Franklin Street, starting December 20.

We will also be holding informational meetings regarding the elementary to middle school assignment process in November and December:

  • 6 p.m. Monday, November 21, at James Lick Middle School, 1220 Noe Street (sessions will be in English and Spanish)
  • 6 p.m. Monday, November 28, at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 350 Girard Street (sessions will be in English, Spanish and Cantonese)
  • 6 p.m. Thursday, December 1, at Roosevelt Middle School, 460 Arguello Blvd. (sessions will be in English and Cantonese)

More information on middle school feeders is on our FAQ.

We look forward to helping you find the right middle school for your child.

Sincerely,

Myong Leigh

Emergency notifications for parents and families

Dear SFUSD families,

Earlier this week gunshots were fired in the school parking lot at dismissal time at June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE), and four students were physically injured. They are recovering. The assailants were not part of the school and appeared to be targeting one student -- there is no ongoing threat to students at JJSE. This isolated event, although awful, should not be viewed as a negative reflection on JJSE, an extremely safe school focused on caring relationships.

This terrible incident has shaken everyone in the community. While students at other schools were not directly impacted, we recognize that an event like this can bring up difficult feelings for you and your child. Please know that school staff is prepared to discuss these feelings with your child and provide additional support as needed.

All school staff remain alert to any potential threats to safety in our school district.  The safety and security of the San Francisco Unified School District’s students and staff is of utmost importance. SFUSD has a comprehensive crisis plan, and district administrators coordinate closely with city emergency management officials and law enforcement representatives to monitor and update plans on a regular basis.

In addition, schools have security measures to ensure the well-being of students and staff. These include: visitor check-in procedures, locked doors after the start of the school day, surveillance cameras, and school resource officer support.

How we notify you if there is a school emergency

If there is an emergency at your child's school or a citywide emergency that impacts your child’s school, SFUSD will notify parents using the contact information in our student information system. Depending on the impact level of the emergency, we will attempt to reach you via a phone call and email using the information in our database, and, if you have opted in to receive text messages, you will receive text notifications as well.

If you do not receive a message it is likely because your current contact information has not been entered into the district’s confidential student information system. We encourage you to check with your school site secretary or principal to ensure they have the most up to date contact information for you in SFUSD’s student information system.  This is the how, in the event of a school or citywide emergency, we can reach you immediately.

Notifications regarding high-impact emergencies will also be posted on the district’s website sfusd.edu, Twitter account (@SFUnified) and shared with the media.

How to sign up for text notifications

If you have a mobile phone entered into our system, you will receive one prompt from SFUSD via SchoolMessenger asking you to opt in to receiving text messages. The message will only be sent one time from the number 67587 and will read: "SFUSD alerts. Reply Y to confirm, HELP for info. Msg&data rates may apply. Msg freq varies. schoolmessenger.com/txt."

We encourage you to reply "Y" to receive text messages from SFUSD and your school, as it often makes for faster communication, which is crucial in the event of an emergency. However, if you do not wish to opt in, you can simply ignore the text message.

You will only receive this message one time, and if you do not reply "Y" to confirm, the district cannot send you future text notifications. If you already received a text message and didn’t reply but do want to receive urgent messages via text, you may still sign up by texting “YES” to the number 67587 from your mobile phone. Please note, if you text this number and your mobile phone is not entered in the student information system, messages will not be sent to it.

More information about SFUSD’s emergency notification procedures can be found here: http://www.sfusd.edu/en/safety-and-emergency-plan/student-safety-and-parent-notification.html

Regards,

Myong Leigh

Statement from SFUSD Interim Superintendent Leigh regarding incident at June Jordan School for Equity

All of us in the San Francisco Unified School District are deeply troubled by the incident that took place yesterday afternoon in the parking lot at June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE). Our understanding at this time is that a small group of outsiders unaffiliated with the school came to campus around the time of school dismissal, targeting a particular JJSE student for reasons that are presently unclear. Sadly, four students were injured during the incident. They have received appropriate medical attention and are recovering from their injuries.

We want to thank the San Francisco Police Department for their support immediately following the incident and for their work in the ongoing investigation. We are also grateful to the paramedics and medical professionals who tended to our students, and we are committed to supporting our students and their families as they overcome their physical and emotional wounds. We also appreciate the offers of support immediately made by Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor John Avalos. Finally, we commend JJSE’s leaders, faculty and students both for their steady, calm and caring actions as the situation evolved and for the dedicated and courageous efforts that they have already begun to heal from yesterday’s events.

I need to state emphatically that this isolated event, although awful, should not be viewed as a negative reflection on JJSE. June Jordan is an intentionally small, extremely safe school focused on deep and caring relationships between all students and adults. All those connected to this school take great pride in, and put special care toward, creating a nurturing community rooted in the shared value of social justice. Through its small class sizes, college-going culture, and focus on rigorous, independent thinking, many JJSE students become the first in their families to attend college.

Though only four students were physically injured, this terrible incident has shaken everyone in the community, particularly the staff and students at June Jordan. Fortunately the school has a strong tradition of coming together daily to discuss challenging topics and to support one another. In addition to coming together as a community, JJSE has trained counselors who will be meeting with students and faculty. We deeply appreciate the educators and students at June Jordan School for Equity and will proudly stand by them through this disturbing, but temporary, challenge.

No credible "creepy clown" reports at SFUSD

For several weeks, there have been reports on social media concerning "creepy clown" sightings and pranks. While these reports come from different parts of the country, they all share a similar theme of frightening people and threatening violence.

Although there is no credible threat in San Francisco, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has been in continuous communication with the district. Local law enforcement and the district are actively monitoring social media posts, including rumors that clowns would show up at schools threatening to do harm. Schools will use safety precautions if necessary, including prohibiting unauthorized visitors, and will immediately contact law enforcement when warranted.

Letter from Board of Education president regarding superintendent transition

Read this in Español or 中文

August 2, 2016

Dear SFUSD Families:

I am writing to you on behalf of all of my colleagues on the SFUSD Board of Education.

Given the news of Superintendent Richard A. Carranza’s likely departure to serve as Houston’s new superintendent, the Board of Education has moved swiftly to ensure a smooth transition and continued positive momentum for our district.

While we begin the community process of searching for a new superintendent to serve our district, the Board of Education is united in choosing Deputy Superintendent Myong Leigh as SFUSD’s interim superintendent.

Mr. Leigh has been with SFUSD since 2000 and has successfully managed day-to-day operations and overseen key district initiatives. Our district has tremendous leadership throughout our schools and central offices. Mr. Leigh will be working with a great team at SFUSD.

We are grateful to have had Superintendent Carranza at the helm for the past seven years--four as superintendent and three as a deputy. Under his leadership, SFUSD has maintained a focus on students’ academic growth through effective common-core aligned teaching and learning while also developing students’ social, emotional and physical well being. Our teachers and other have received more resources to do their critical work, including greater compensation, professional learning opportunities and access to technology.

The board takes seriously our responsibility to ensure the most capable and qualified leader for our school district moving forward. In the near future there will be a public meeting to discuss a selection process for the next superintendent of schools. Our national search process will be inclusive, transparent, and thorough.

Without a doubt, we will prioritize finding a leader who shares our vision for ensuring every graduate is ready to succeed in college and careers. We will prioritize someone who has a track record of leading around our enduring goals of student achievement, access, equity, and accountability. And we will seek someone who can work with you and our entire community to move our district closer to our vision.

As we embark on the search for a new leader for SFUSD, input from our families is critical. Please check our website, sfusd.edu, for updates on future public meetings where the Board will gather input on the superintendent search and selection process.

All our school administrators are looking forward to greeting you and your children back to school on August 15.

Sincerely,

Matt Haney

Updates regarding the email threat to SFUSD

Please see the attachments for Chinese and Spanish translations of this letter.

December 17, 2015

Dear SFUSD families,

This is to follow up with you with more information about the non-specific email threat that came to SFUSD on Thursday, December 17.

What happened

On Thursday morning I was notified by a few SFUSD staff that they had received an email threat of violence similar to the one received earlier this week by Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Miami and several other cities. The violence that was threatened was not specific to any school site.

We immediately contacted local and federal law enforcement agencies. City agencies and the school district conducted inspections and worked in close coordination to determine whether or not there was a risk to the safety of students and staff. Nothing suspicious was found and we did not deem the threat to be credible. As a precautionary measure the San Francisco Police Department increased their presence around schools and transit corridors to and from schools.

Supporting students

While students were not directly impacted, we recognize that an event like this can bring up difficult feelings for you and your child. School staff is prepared to discuss these feelings with your child and provide additional support as needed. Also, we’ve attached information that may be helpful for discussing this event with your family at home.

Communicating with you in emergencies

As we did today, SFUSD will immediately notify parents using the contact information in our student information system via a phone call and email and, if you have opted in to receive text messages, you will receive text notifications as well. If you did not receive a phone call from SFUSD today, it is likely because your current contact information has not been entered into the online and confidential student information system. We encourage you to check with your school site secretary or principal to ensure they have the most up to date contact information for you in SFUSD’s student information system so that in the event of real emergency school or districtwide emergency, we can reach you immediately.

Emergency notifications will also be updated on the district’s website, sfusd.edu, and shared with the media. If you’d like to receive general text alerts about emergencies in San Francisco, you may text “AlertSF” to 888-777 or sign up at AlertSF.org.

Stay safe

As a reminder, we encourage you and your child to immediately report any suspicious activities to 9-1-1 or nearby law enforcement.  Please know that all school staff remain alert to any potential threats to safety in our school district.  The safety and security of our students is our top priority.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Carranza

Superintendent of Schools

Information about Measles for Parents

There has been a recent outbreak of measles in California and neighboring states. The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) have collaborated to offer free measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines to current SFUSD students. All families are encouraged to first seek care with their primary health care provider, if they have one.

If your child needs a vaccine, contact the School Health Center at 415-242-2615 for more information or go to one of our onsite clinics. Find out more about measles vaccinations and where to get them.

Once you've set it up, you simply have to remember to go to www.amazonsmile.com instead of www.amazon.com. If you go to the normal Amazon site, the money will not go to Marshall.  It took me a while to get into the habit, but now I have trained myself to go to the Smile site :)

EVERYONE needs to apply for school lunch - even if you don't need it!

It's two weeks until the start of school. The annual task of completing school meal forms begins today. You can complete the application online now or do it the old fashion way of submitting the paper form (when school starts). If you do it online this month, you have the opportunity to win prizes and help the Student Nutrition Services department (think of the task of collecting 56,000+ forms)!

EVERYONE needs to complete the form, https://schoolmealapp.sfusd.edu. Save the school district money by applying online today.

Students Unable To Receive Daily Homework Email

Some students are reporting that they are unable to receive their daily homework emails to their preferred email accounts. The issue is caused by these preferred emails being over written by an “@s.sfusd.edu” email address. We are working with School Loop to deploy a fix as soon as possible and hope to have a fix in place in 2 to 3 weeks. Once the fix is in place, students will need to re-enter their preferred address into the e-mail field in the Account Management window.

In the meantime, students will need to log into their site’s School Loop page directly to view in-progress grades and assignments. For a list of SFUSD School Loop URLs, please click here.

Once the fix has been released, another news item will be sent out alerting students to re-enter their preferred e-mail address.

Important Announcement about Change to the Instructional Calendar

May 31, 2013 will be a full school day. May 31 had been scheduled as a half day due to budget cuts. However, based on increasing stability in the state’s finances due to Proposition 30, SFUSD is reducing the furlough days scheduled for this year down to only one day. This means that May 31, 2013 will be a full day for students and staff. Next year there will be 180 full school days and no furlough days for staff

System Bulletin: Software Release Friday, 4/12 at 10pm PST

School Loop will be performing a release tonight at 10pm PST. All websites will remain up for visitors. Users will be unable to login for a portion of the release, but most should be back online within 90 minutes.

In addition to bug fixes, School Loop is updating the portals based on your feedback. They are reducing the font size of the Academics section for students and parents and progress reports will be available with one click from the portal. They’re also fixing up the progress report to reduce the size of the rows and we are making the print view more efficient by moving the graph and zero's report to the bottom.

The link button in the Rich Text Editor now works in Internet Explorer 9 and 10. However there is still an issue in these browsers that prevents linking highlighted text when using the tabs in the link window. The workaround is to create the link first without highlighting any text, then once the link is on the page, change the text as desired.

Thanks for your input and your patience as we continue to improve School Loop.

System Bulletin: Software Release Tonight, Monday, 4/8 at 5:30pm PST

School Loop will be performing a release tonight at 5:30pm PST. Users will be unable to login for a portion of the release, but most should be back online within 90 minutes.

The list of fixes includes:

  • File permission errors in lockers
  • Problem submitting work from your device or from locker docs
  • Adding back the ability of students to hide grades on their portal
  • Other minor fixes

Workarounds before the release:

  • If you really need access to a locker item before the release, you can send School Loop the URL for the file that is displayed in the permissions error and we will fix it for you.
  • Submitting files from the student locker is working, so students can upload their file to their locker first, then choose to submit "From your Locker" in the assignment.

This release is earlier than normal, but School Loop believes it important to get some critical bugs fixed that were introduced with the new portal release over the weekend. Thanks for your patience while we work on this major School Loop improvement.

Important Message to all Families about Middle School Applications

As many families know, their child’s elementary school can “feed” their student into a designated middle school. However, they still must turn in an application form requesting that feeder school. A form has been sent to all fifth grade families, which includes the child’s feeder middle school name.

Assignment to a middle school is not automatic. Families must indicate the name of the feeder school – and any other middle school families would also like to request – on the application.

School applications are due Tuesday, January 22.  They can be submitted at the child’s present school or to the Educational Placement Center at 555 Franklin Street.  For more information, please come to the Educational Placement Center and speak to a placement counselor who can guide families through this process.  No appointment is needed.

More feeder school information.

Letter from Superintendent Carranza

August, 2012

Dear SFUSD Families:

On behalf of the entire San Francisco Unified School District family, I want to thank you for being a part of our community and entrusting us with your children. We look forward to working closely with you to ensure your child’s success.

I’m proud that we’re one of the top performing urban school districts in California and the students in our district continue to make steady academic achievement gains year after year. I’m proud to assure you that we’re not just focused on most children being successful - we’re committed to every child being successful. We are being very thoughtful and very strategic about how we approach student learning. We’re going to monitor how students are learning and, if they’re learning, we’re going to help them learn even more. If  they’re not learning, we’re going to go back and make sure that they master the skill set that’s necessary to get to the next level.

Throughout the district we’re asking these four fundamental questions and I encourage you to adopt these questions as well as you visit your child’s school: 1) What do we expect students to learn? 2) How will we know if they are learning? 3) What will we do when students have already learned it? and 4) How do we respond when students don’t learn?

We believe in a well-rounded education for children, one where children speak multiple languages including English, and where -  in addition to strong instruction in reading, writing, science, history, geography and mathematics - our students are learning dance, music and visual and performing arts. They’re participating in physical activities and learning how to be healthy. They’re learning how to communicate and collaborate with each other.

While we strive to offer all that our children need to learn and grow, the State of California continues to spend less on public education than almost any other state in the U.S. Because of this lack of funding, we can’t do everything we wish we could. Thankfully this school year, we will be almost back to the usual 180 days, minus a half day on the last day of the year.  However, if voters don’t support Proposition 30 and/or 38 in November, we’ll have to cut the school year shorter this spring and next school year.  So please be sure to vote.

The challenging fiscal climate aside, I am so excited for the start of the school year! I look forward to visiting schools and seeing our students engaged in joyful learning. Nothing makes me happier.

Yours truly,

Richard Carranza
Superintendent of Schools

School Loop Network Issues Resolved (August 11, 2012)
The School Loop network issues have been resolved as of 1:38 pm on August 11, 2012.

School Loop engineers have restored full service but are still looking into the cause of this morning's issues. The likely culprit at this point is the server they use to host the pages our users see when attempting to log in during a maintenance outage. The goal at this point is to find the source of the problem and to take the necessary steps to ensure it will not happen again. They are committed to providing a reliable service and it pains them that they failed in that commitment today. When a solution is identified, School Loop will make a general announcement about our specific course of action.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding this morning.

RESOLVED: School Loop Login Issues with AD Accounts

Good Morning,

Around 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon, members of the SFUSD I.T. department noticed that user accounts tied to Active Directory (district username accounts) were unable to access School Loop and immediately began researching the issue. Dedicated I.T. staff continued their work late into Saturday evening and continued throughout Sunday in hopes of finding a resolution.

As of 8:20 a.m. today, all login issues with School Loop user accounts tied to Active Directory have been resolved.

While this is one of over 100 services that we were able to restore swiftly as planned, we unfortunately did not anticipate the problem with School Loop's customized AD integration applet. We do sincerely apologize for the service interruption and thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. We understand the importance of the work you do and it pains us greatly when technical issues interfere with that work.

Thank you.

IE Drag and Drop
Updated software now supports drag and drop in the CMS and seating charts for IE 9.

Assignment Reordering
This bug has been extremely difficult to test, but we’re cautiously optimistic that we’ve fixed this bug that causes new assignments to move out of order in GB4.

School Loop: Network Performance Restored!

The School Loop network is now operating at its normal high speed. If there are isolated pockets with remaining issues, please submit a ticket as soon as possible to help@schoolloop.com.

Again, School Loop deeply apologize for all the troubles over the past couple of days and thanks you for your patience and understanding. They do understand the importance of the work you do and it pains their team greatly when technical issues interfere with that work.

This weekend, School Loop will perform a system restart so that they may further isolate the offending operation. Details of that restart will appear in a follow up notice.

Thank you.

School Loop Performance Status Update 8/31/11

The two new hard drives have been installed and were fully functional around 5 am this morning. We will be monitoring the system closely for the next few days.  Additionally we are looking into other ways to improve general performance - including hardware upgrades to our Storage Area Network.  Stay tuned for more.

School Loop Performance Issues

School Loop is currently experiencing some performance issues. However, they are working hard to restore normal network performance. They are currently in the process of installing 2 new hard drives and syncing both drives with the system. The process should be completed by 6:00 am on August 31, 2011.

Until then, users should expect intermittent problems connecting to their sites and general slowness. In the evenings, usage does normally drop off and performance should improve. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience in this matter.

Thank you.

Care About School Food? SHORT SURVEY- QUICK & EASY

Come to the Table & Give Your Input

SFUSD, the SF Food Bank and the Dept. of Public Health are working together to take a close look at our current school meals program, with the goal of improving it to serve more kids better food.

We brought in consultants (hired by the SF Food Bank, no district funds) to assess the current program from tip to tail, including conducting scores of interviews, several focus groups and visiting more than 40 schools.

A critical component of the project is input from parents, students, principals and school staff. We created very short surveys for each of these groups (no more than 10 minutes) and they are available online to make it super easy to distribute widely.

(Note that parent surveys are in 3 languages. As well, paper versions will be distributed to schools that host a Healthy Children Pantry and upon request).

WE NEED YOUR HELP to get this survey in front of as many parents, students, school staff and principals as possible.

1. Send this email to everyone and every list you can -- parents, school staff, your kids and friends, list-serves, PTA or school list-serves/websites -- and ask everyone to fill out the survey. (Note that the principals received this survey via their usual district communication channels and were asked to forward to staff -- the time of year being what it is, we are not seeing a lot of staff responses, so if you can encourage principals, teachers and other school-based staff to complete the survey and send to friends, it would be FANTASTIC!!).

2. Don't forget to fill it out yourself! It's quick.

The link to the surveys is www.prismaticservices.com/sanfrancisco.html

On the landing page you will also find fact sheets available in 3 languages if you want more information about the project or survey.

Thank you,

Student Nutriton Services, SF Food Bank, & SF Department of Public Health, Environmental Health

System Bulletin: Login Issues

Some users may have been experiencing difficulties login in to School Loop - only users with accounts tied to the SFUSD active directory system would have been affected. A temporary change has been made that should have eliminated any of the problems, but as SFUSD and School Loop work to resolve the initial problem some users may experience intermittent issues when attempting to log in. Please wait a few minutes and try again if this happens to you. We are working as fast as possible resolve all issues.

MealPayPlus.com - Easy Meal Payments & View History of Purchases

It's lunchtime: Do you know where your child's lunch money is? Do you what your child ate for breakfast or lunch today?

Now you will. Our school cafeteria has a prepayment program called MealpayPlus that will increase convenience for families and speed up lunch lines. Student Nutrition Services is encouraging families to prepay for students’ school meals by the month, by the week or on their own schedule.

MealpayPlus allows families to register at www.mealpayplus.com and prepay by credit card, debit card or electronic check online or by phone. Families may also pay by check or cash at school, or may choose to send checks by mail.  MealpayPlus will also allow families, including those who qualify for National School Lunch Program free or reduced-price meals, to view their students’ history of purchases in the cafeterias, so parents can see what their child is eating.

Other benefits of MealpayPlus include eliminating the need for children to carry cash to school, reducing cash losses, and helping the district meet all requirements set by the National School Lunch Program. The technology is now up and running at all SFUSD middle and high schools, and is going online at several elementary schools a week. It will be completed in all San Francisco public schools by the end of the school year. For families with children in more than one school, you will be notified by the school when the program is online.

If paying online, there is a 4.75% transaction fee. However, SFUSD offers a Bonus payment to your account which is equal to the fee.
